The international conference on “Olive tree and olive oil: Symbols of prosperity and culture in the wider Black Sea area” took place on October 7, 2009, in Baku, Azerbaijan. The event was co-organised by the BSEC Business Council and the National Confederation of Entrepreneurs of Azerbaijan, with the official support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Economic Development of Azerbaijan and under the auspices of Greek and Turkish Embassies in Baku. It was held in honour of the celebration of “Baku Islamic Cultural Capital 2009” .

The conference had a great success hosting more than 100 guests, both olive oil producers-traders and people launching initiatives around the olive oil culture in the region. It was also a unique occasion for people coming from the BSEC olive oil producer countries (Albania, Azerbaijan, Greece and Turkey), to meet and cooperate. The event provided a unique opportunity for business people and government officials to explore the potentials of this dynamic region as well as offered extensive networking opportunities. It was a very timely occasion to gain first hand knowledge of the key dynamics shaping the region’s olive oil production within the context of the future of the agricultural sector. Among the positive outcomes of the conference is the wish of the participants similar conferences to be organized on an annual basis in the BSEC region.
