Trade barriers are a general term that describes any government policy or regulation that restricts international trade. They can take many forms and are classified in two main categories:
WHAT WE ARE DOING? Trade Barriers issue is among one of the four task forces of the Business Council. The Secretary General had meetings with the officials from the Market Access department of the EU Trade Commission in Brussels to discuss the methodologies used (questionnaires for businesspeople surveys, reporting barriers, resolving barriers) and to lay the basis for future cooperation.
Following these consultations the Secretariat, together with the members of the Task Force, formulated the questionnaire (which you can download from here) following EU practices and also utilizing the relevant experience that some of our countries already have. In the meantime, the Secretariat has started compiling specific trade-barrier information from the Market Access site, so that we can start developing a data base for BSEC countries. While dealing with the various kinds of barriers-to-trade and with cross-border trade facilitation issues, the Secretariat also aims at promoting within BSEC the idea of establishing a Free Trade Area and facilitating the process thereof.
